And don’t worry if the movie is rated for a higher level, you can always turn on the English subtitles and just let the Dutch wash over you. Veel kijkplezier!


Ferry

Crime, Drama

About: Ferry (Frank Lammers) is content. He lives a good life in Amsterdam, as the chief enforcer for the city’s top vice king. When one of their drug processing houses is hit by two gunmen, Ferry wants revenge. And if you like the movie... It is a prequel to the series ‘Undercover’. And that series is also on Netflix!

Level: Intermediate and advanced. Some dialogues are fast and you will hear different Dutch dialects.

Just say yes

Romance, comedy

About: 33-year-old Lotte works as a producer in Amsterdam, where her boyfriend Alex has his own talk show. Lotte has been in a relationship with him for five years and has long been hoping in vain for a marriage proposal. But Lotte's life is turned upside down, just as her self-absorbed sister gets engaged.

Level: All levels.

Riphagen

War, drama

About: The film Riphagen tells the true story of Andries Riphagen, the biggest war criminal the Netherlands has ever known. The criminal who was already known in the Amsterdam underworld in the 1930s becomes wealthy by collaborating with the Germans. A critic review on Rotten Tomatoes: “A gripping, ugly movie built around one of the great villainous Nazi turns.

Level: Intermediate. Dialogues can be fast at times.

Anne+: De film

Drama, LGBTQ+

About: Just before Anne is moving from Amsterdam to live with her great love Sara in Montréal, her publisher criticizes the manuscript for her first novel. What exactly is the story she’s trying to tell? Does she even have something to say at all? Anne is forced to search for what she wants in life, because it is not only the main character in her novel who seems to be a little lost. Then she meets Lou, a non-binary drag king, who has a very different attitude towards life. Anne keeps stumbling through life and slowly finds direction and clarity in her life. She rewrites her book and realises that she has some significant choices to make. And if you like this movie, Netflix also has a series of Anne+!

Meskina

Romance, comedy

About: Heartbroken, jobless and in her 30s, Moroccan-Dutch Leyla, is seen as a "Meskina" (a pity-case) by her family, who desperately wants to couple her. This romantic comedy has all the cliches, but is still enjoyable to watch.

Level: Intermediate. Some fast dialogues, but easy to follow overall.
